A prayer service was held at Connelly Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock Monday, after which the body was removed to the United Brethern Church at Wakelee where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ernest Miller and burial was in the Little Fish Lake Cemetery. Mr Gebhard had been a resident of this county since 1853. He was a son of Michael and Margaret Gebhard and was born near Baden, Germany. His parents came to America the following year bringing with them their four children; Conrad, who was long a resident of Newburg Twp; John, who spent his active years at Cadillac; Elizabeth, later Elizabeth Denner; and Martin. They first went to Chicago, but not liking the swamp country, he brought his family to the vicinity of Dowagiac, where his brothers Jake and John had previously located. Later, the family moved south of Volinia where Martin grew to young manhood. He married, in 1878, Miss Lina Clawson (sic), who died in 1881, leaving him with two sons, Henry Edward Gebhard of Vandalia, and Clyde of Cassopolis. In 1883 he married to Miss Emma Kline, who survives him, as do their three children; Maude, wife of R.F. Peck of Cassopolis; Miss Mertie Gebhard of Cassopolis, (later Mrs. Clyde Lutes), and Clifford, who now resides on the home farm in Newburg.

Mr. Gebhard was always an industrious and upright citizen who merited and received the esteem and good will of his neighbors, not only in the neighborhood where he had lived so long but in this village to which he came in his declining years.
