I live in Berkeley, California and have lived here for nearly 30 years. HI live in Berkeley, California and have lived here for nearly 30 years. Here’s a quick sketch of my life so far. Following graduation from high school in Southern California, I attended Los Angeles Trade Tech in their photography program and graduated in August 1960. I worked as a photographer for a couple of years while also taking classes at a Junior College. After earning the equivalent of one year of college credit, I transferred to what was then San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University, Northridge) as a sophomore in 1963 and graduated with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Philosophy in 1966. During this time I worked as a “paper pusher” in the pressroom of the L.A. Times. I married Karen Abbott in 1966. We had two children, Jennifer, born in 1970 and Jason, born in 1972. I took graduate sociology and computer classes at CSUN for a couple of years before transferring to the Ph.D. program at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1968. I took my first teaching job at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) in 1973, received my Ph.D. in 1975 On the Bicentennial -- July 4, 1976 – we flew to Boston and I begin a new job at a social science think tank in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Most of the research I did was in the field of criminal and juvenile justice. Karen and I divorced in 1980. Co-parenting the children, we all returned to California in 1981, this time to the Bay Area, when I went to work for the National Council on Crime and Delinquency as a Senor Scientist. I left NCCD in 1983 to form a company with a good friend of mine to develop software that used animation to display symbolic representations of complex systems. We came close, but were never successful in launching the software. Dianne Woods and I were married in 1988 and are still happily married. I was the Director of Research for the Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management and Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco from 1990 to 1995. From 1995 to 1997, I again tried to make a go of the software project, did some consulting work for NCCD, continued as an Adjunct Professor at USF, and began to work occasionally as a Legislative Aide for a Councilmember in Berkeley. I went back to work at NCCD full time from 1997 to 2000 and until June of 2007 worked full time as a Legislative Aide for the Berkeley Councilmember.
