Since the enumerator probably visited his residence (N.E. of Keswick, York Co., Ontario) earlier in 1871, his age would have been 67 at the time. He would not have been 68 until that October and certainly the Census would have been completed by then. Richard Mann is the father to Hannah Mann of whom married Chauncey Barber.

INTRODUCTION - Re: Fleming Young as originally typed Dennis BarberINTRODUCTION - Re: Fleming Young as originally typed Dennis Barber
As I recall, I was eleven when I went with my parents and a neighbor coup As I recall, I was eleven when I went with my parents and a neighbor couple back East to a Convention. This was back in 1954. On the way back, Dad decided to go through Canada in hopes of finding something about the Barber families that had lived there. We stopped at Newmarket to have lunch. While eating, Dad overheard a man at a nearby table talking about Hannah Mann. So, he went over to that table and make inquiry. It turned out that the old man's name was Fleming Young, and he was related to our Hannah. Fleming kindly invited us to see Chauncey's old home place near by, of which we accepted. At the property, I recall only seeing clusters of trees and an old wooden rail fence. No buildings. Somebody took a picture of Dad standing to the side of the road in front of the land. If I remember, Fleming also talked about the Barber family plot in a cemetery that was somewhere near by. I don't recall seeing it, but we may have drove by it. After that, we headed on home.
Dad and Fleming wrote back and forth for a few years. At different tim Dad and Fleming wrote back and forth for a few years. At different times, Fleming would send information to Dad about the Manns until he was never heard from again. Dad figured he probably died. In the late 1970's Dad began to type out all the family information, including the Manns. But he never quite finished because he passed away. Though all of his typed notes were disorganized, I was able to put most of the families back in their right order over the years and start my own searches and updates - 1994.

Barber Emma Reta [Female] b. 24 MAR 1871 Keswick, York Co, Ontario, Canada

However, Emma Reta BARBER, who married Edward ("Ed"), FENTON did soon after their marriage remove to Battle Creek Michigan where they later both died. Over the years, contact with Emma and her family was not as well maintained as it had been for her other siblings and, consequently, our FENTON information was not as fruitful. Hence, It is quite possible that at one time, Emma and Ed did reside at Bedford, Michigan, which is indeed in close proximity to Battle Creek. I personally would be more inclined to first search in Battle Creek for their Grave Stones. Something to do later during retirement. The last our family had heard from the FENTON family, I believe, was in the mid 1970's as I can not find any further correspondence after that. I will again look through our family things. Perhaps there may be a mention of Bedford, or at least some sort of clue that would suggest that they had lived there at one time. Note is from cousin Donna Barber.

Barber Amelia Susan [Female] b. 3 AUG 1872 Keswick, York Co, Ontario, Canada - d. AFT 1931 Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Amelia Susan BARBER and her husband, Jesse W. GAFFIN began their married life farming in eastern South Dakota, later they moved on to rural Minnesota where they continued farming (raising purebred hogs - primarily). After Amelia's father, Chauncey BARBER, died in 1906. Mother Hannah (Mann) BARBER remarried to William F. TAYLOR, an old Civil War Veteran who had served in a Pennsylvania unit. After William TAYLOR died in 1924, mother Hannah, her health failing, went to live with her daughter, Amelia, at the GAFFIN (hog) farm near Willmar, Minnesota. Here, mother Hannah passed away in 1927. in 1931, Amelia and Jesse then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where they eventually retired and both passed away. Both Amelia and Jesse were buried at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sorry to say, our family notes/obits, etc. do not mention anything about Amelia and Jesse living in Michigan at any time during their life. Note is from cousin Donna Barber

Note from Donna Barber:Note from Donna Barber:
Little Ada was the 1st born child of Chauncey and Hannah (Mann) BARBER. A Little Ada was the 1st born child of Chauncey and Hannah (Mann) BARBER. Ada was born Mar 17, 1868 in N. Gwillimbury Twp. of York Co., Ontario and died March 4, 1871 - twenty days before Hannah gave birth to her twins: Emery and Emma. At the time Chauncey and Hannah were living in N. Gwillimbury Twp. Ada's Grandmother, Pamelia (Crittenden) BARBER, died in 1863 and was buried in the Mann Cemetery. When little Ada died, she was also buried at the Mann Cemetery with Pamelia. Following the passing of Pamelia, Ada's Grandfather, Lawson Sr., later moved to Illinois to live with his son Lawson Jr. In the summer of 1884, Lawson Sr. went to visit his daughter, Lucetta, who at the time lived in Iowa. While at his daughter's, Lawson Sr. rather unexpectantly died on August 2, 1884. Son Lawson Jr. came to Iowa and escorted his father's remains back to Canada by rail. Lawson Sr. was then buried in the Old Newmarket Cemetery in the "Barber family plot". At the same time, Pamelia and little Ada had been disinterred from their grave in the Mann Cemetery and then reburied in the Barber family plot along with Lawson Sr. in the old Newmarket Cemetery.
