Mann died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Theodore J. Phillips, 417 North Seventh Street, at 11:25 o'clock. He was an invalid for the past two years, suffering intense pain, but standing it with uncommon fortitude.
George D. Mann was born in Whitesboro, Oneida County, New York, Mar George D. Mann was born in Whitesboro, Oneida County, New York, March 23, 1825. He spent his boyhood days at his birthplace and as a young man he was a resident of Watertown, N. Y., where he conducted a music store for some times and also taught music. In the year of 1857 he came to Keokuk and was engaged in the same business here until 1861, when he engaged in the jewelry and music business under the firm name of Bailey & Mann. After that he was a member of the old firm of Ayres, Mann & Ayres. He then carried on the jewelry business alone for some time, when he went into partnership with Hornaday. About twenty years ago he sold out to Hornaday and engaged in the florist business, which he successfully carried on until about two years ago. Since that time he has been living with his niece, being confined most of that time to his bed.

Mr. Mann was a devout Christian and was a member of the Westminster P Mr. Mann was a devout Christian and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church. He was deeply interested in church affairs and devoted considerable of time to its work. The new pipe organ which was installed in the church a few years ago is a result of his hard work, and it was largely through his promotion and solicitation that it was placed there. He worked hard and solicited two-thirds of the cost of the organ by himself. He taught a Sabbath school class in the Bank street mission for about ten years until his health prevented it. Church work was upon his mind until the last. The day before his death he was at work on a piece of embroidery which was to be exhibited at the bazaar, which is to be given by members of the church in the near future. He was a lover of music and flowers, which fact no doubt will explain the kind disposition which he possessed and which made him numerous friends. He was kind to everybody and was affable and courteous in all his business transactions. He was a patient sufferer and bore up to the last.

The original idea came from Sharon Patchett, who is also giving her time to the project. Sisters Marcia Alary and Barbara Britt, both of whom have been volunteering on other projects for the website, are also working on this. Gary Roe was one of the first to get his work in. We are grateful to each of them for making this material so easily available. More volunteers have made contributions as the task proceeded. Sharon Lagendyk's work has been extremely accurate and timely. Mark Wentling has undertaken a special project connected with the gazetteer. Eleanor Burrows here in Jefferson County, and Melinda Cornwell in Alaska are our newest volunteers.
