Merritt J. Rogers, who lives retired at Sullivan, was born in Sullivan To Merritt J. Rogers, who lives retired at Sullivan, was born in Sullivan Township, Ashland County, Sept. 1, 1850, the son of Nathan P. and Poulina P. (Park) Rogers.

Nathan P. Rogers was born in Chenango County, N. Y., as was his wife. AboNathan P. Rogers was born in Chenango County, N. Y., as was his wife. About 1836 they came to Ohio and settled at Sullivan, where Mr. Rogers followed his trade as a hatter for several years. He then purchased a farm two miles north of Sullivan and seven years later purchased the present Rogers homestead just south of Sullivan, where he spent thirty years. He died in 1889, and his wife died in 1882. Both are buried at Sullivan. In early life Mr. Rogers was a Whig and later a Republican. Both he and his wife held membership in the Baptist Church of Sullivan, in which he served as deacon for forty years. To Mr. and Mrs. Rogers were born nine children, as follows: Henry M., who died in 1920; Edgar L., who died in 1925; F. Delia, born Oct. 11, 1839, recently celebrated her 91st birthday, and lives at Sullivan; Alcetta M., who died in 1915, was the wife of M. L. Sage; Theodore J., who died in 1915; Royce N., who died in 1909; Carrie P. Safford, deceased; Merritt 3., the subject of this sketch; and Arthur A., who died in 1920. All the members of this family attained the age of at least 70 years.

Merritt J. Rogers attended the public schools of Sullivan and Savannah AcaMerritt J. Rogers attended the public schools of Sullivan and Savannah Academy. He was a teacher in the schools of Ashland County for ten years, and after his marriage in 1876 removed to Cleveland, where he spent five years in the employ of the Big Four Railroad. He then traveled for 20 years, after which he purchased his present home and returned to Sullivan.

Mr. Rogers was married (first) May 28, 1876, to Miss Fannie L. Mann, of SuMr. Rogers was married (first) May 28, 1876, to Miss Fannie L. Mann, of Sullivan, the daughter of Parmely and Rosetta Mann, who were members of a prominent pioneer family of Ashland County. To this union were born two children: 1. Carrie L., born at Sullivan, March 26, 1878, married C. E. Daniels, and lives at Madison, Wis. They have two children, Parmely C. and Eleanor L. The latter married W. Walker and lives in Cairo, Egypt. 2. Howard M., who died in 1906.

Nathaniel Mann, who m. Elizabeth George in 1704, came from MassachusetNathaniel Mann, who m. Elizabeth George in 1704, came from Massachusetts to what is now Mansfield when it was a wilderness, and being the first settler in the place, it was honored by the name of Mansfield, in memory of its first settler, about 1720. He removed to Hebron, where he purchased another farm, and settled upon it for life--but he died at his son's in Colchester, at an advanced age. Among his children he had a son John, who lived, and died in old age, upon the farm purchased by his father in 1720.

History of Mann Valley History of Mann Valley
The area now called Mann Valley is located about three miles east of the SThe area now called Mann Valley is located about three miles east of the St. Croix River, about 11 miles up river, at the point where the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers meet. These would be the directions necessary for a pioneer coming to the area in about 1783, for all inhabitants were Native Americans. By 1853, the Chippewa Indians had left the St. Croix and quickly were replaced by white settlers. The first places settled were the shores of the St. Croix River. Also by 1853 most of the timber that had covered the land had been cleared for farming. One of the most important families who settled in this area was the Manns

Nathaniel Mann and Eunice (Bennett) Mann had the following sons: J Nathaniel Mann and Eunice (Bennett) Mann had the following sons: John, Richard, Nathaniel, and Stephen. John purchased land in what is now called Troy Township and Clifton Township. John and his brother Richard M. Mann came to the valley with their families. The 1860 census shows John and Eunice living in Troy Township with their children, Dennis, Charlotte, Stephen (and his wife Sarah Twiss, their children Henry, Mary E. and Malon), Richard (and his wife Mary), Samantha (and her husband Peter), William (his wife Martha and their children, Charlotte, Albert and infant), and Nathaniel (his wife Julia Ann), and Charlotte. The 1860 Census also shows Richard Mann and his wife Harriet and their children, John, Delany, and Orson.

(Editor's note: the census list Charlotte married to Peleg and Samantha married to Lester, this contradicts previous census and other documentation.)

Shortly after the family arrived there was a death in the Mann fa Shortly after the family arrived there was a death in the Mann family. Harriet Mann, daughter of Nathaniel Mann, died on October 19, 1854. (Deed)On the original John Mann farm, a family cemetery was located. The one acre cemetery was located on a low wooded knoll. After her death, they shared the cemetery with family and neighbors. The last burial appears to be Dennis Mann on November 4, 1884. (See Timeline)

William and Richard Mann served in the Civil War, enlisting on JanuaWilliam and Richard Mann served in the Civil War, enlisting on January 2, 1864. They served in Company D of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry. On June 11, 1864, William rode his horse to a nearby steam of water. A severe lightening storm was raging at the time and he was struck and killed by a bolt of lightening
