ANCESTRY OF ELIZABETH KINSEYANCESTRY OF ELIZABETH KINSEY

I am not a Kinsey, but my sister married into the family and performed thI am not a Kinsey, but my sister married into the family and performed this research with the help of a friend in England. The following information was compiled based on original research and copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses, baptismal records, etc. The research was performed in Bilston, England and surrounding areas of the Midlands. It begins with the grandfather of Elizabeth Kinsey, Richard, and continues with her father, George.

RICHARD KINSEY (1828-1913) was born in 1828 in Worthington, LeicestershirRICHARD KINSEY (1828-1913) was born in 1828 in Worthington, Leicestershire, a small town about 3 miles northwest of Birmingham, England. He was the son of Thomas Kinsey of nearby Ashby-de-la-Zouch, who was a farmer. Many farms in England were entailed (i.e., passed on to the oldest son intact), forcing younger sons to take up trades to support themselves. Richard may have been a younger son of the Kinsey family.

MARTHA COOLISHAW (1830-1906), the daughter of Edward and Hannah CoolishaMARTHA COOLISHAW (1830-1906), the daughter of Edward and Hannah Coolishaw, was born in Grendon, Warwickshire on Aug. 1, 1830. Grendon is a village 15 miles northwest of central Birmingham and an equal distance from Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The family name of Coolishaw is variously spelled "Coulishaw" or "Coolyshaw". Edward Coolishaw was a labourer.

From the time he left his father's farm, Richard always worked with horseFrom the time he left his father's farm, Richard always worked with horses. When his son, Richard Edward, was baptized on May 13, 1958, Richard stated he was a letter carrier (by horse and wagon) for the Royal Post Office. By the 1861 Census, Richard said he was a "carter", and by 1871, he added "jobbing carter and horsekeeper". In 1881, he described himself as a "contractor," which probably means he ran a fleet of horse carts and carriages for hire. He was living at 35 Mill Street, Bilston, Staffordshire (a town which is now part of the Birmingham metropolitan area), and he listed his birthplace as Worthington, which is about five miles from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, a larger town where he was probably christened. During the 19th Century, the iron- and steel-producing portion of the Midlands to which Birmingham was central became known as the Black Country, named for the black smoke from its factories.
Marriage and ChildrenMarriage and Children

Richard and Martha were married in Ashby-da-la-Zouch's parish church on NoRichard and Martha were married in Ashby-da-la-Zouch's parish church on Nov. 27, 1848, a year in which short-lived revolutions were attempted throughout Europe. Englishmen, despite the growing inequities between the upper class and laborers, resisted the temptation to unrest and remained true to their monarchy and Parliament. When they were married, Richard, aged 22, worked as a coachman in Ashby, and Martha, aged 18, as a servant (possibly in the same large household). Both were apparently members of the Anglican Church at the time. ("Ashby-de-la-Zouche" is mentioned in the novel Ivanhoe as the scene of a great medieval tournament. "Hence it is always mentioned in the old records, as the Gentle and Joyous Passage of Arms of Ashby").

Richard and Martha moved frequently within the Midlands during their earRichard and Martha moved frequently within the Midlands during their early married life. By the time their son Thomas (2d) was born, they lived in Leicester, Leicestershire, a growing industrial town (where King Richard III was buried in the local abbey after his defeat at Bosworth in 1485). The Kinseys then moved to Warwick, Warwickshire, where they stayed until sometime after 1858, when their son Richard was born. It is probable that during these years Richard worked as a carter, hauling produce for local farmers and businessmen, but he was finally forced to move to a more prosperous area to feed his growing family. They eventually moved to Coseley, and then to Bilston, both smaller towns which are now suburbs of metropolitan Birmingham. Richard and Martha had 11 children:

Hannah (aka Susannah) Kinsey was born in Ashby de la Zouch, LeicestershiHannah (aka Susannah) Kinsey was born in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire in 1839, per LDS records; however, she was obviously born about 1831/32, according to her burial record. IGI shows Susannah Kinsey, daughter of Thomas and Charlotte, being christened as an “adult” on 14 Apr. 1849 in Ashby de la Zouch. As "Hannah", she had been living with her widowed mother in Leicestershire in the 1841 Census. According to the FreeBMD Death Index, she died in 1849 in Church Gresley and was buried in St. Margaret's Cemetery, Blackfordby 17 Apr. 1849, aged 17. She must have been baptized on her deathbed.

Since she was 17 when she died in 1849, she must have been born in late 18Since she was 17 when she died in 1849, she must have been born in late 1831 -- which definitely makes her Hannah.
