The name Schimke evolved from the biblical given name Simon, OriginalThe name Schimke evolved from the biblical given name Simon, Originally it would have been an only name. Spellings varied. As soon as the 1200,S in the present area of southern Poland/Czechoslovakia it was Szymon. Schimon probably was a variation in another area. Simke, Schinke, Schimko also came from Simon. The earliest known uses are: Simke Von Zarrow(1345) of Breslau, Schimke Rathibor (1370), and Schimke Von Kalkow (1381) of Kr. Neisse The ke ending indicates that the Schimke variation is from the area of present East Germany, north of Berlin. Schim is the short form (nickname) of Simon (Schimon). The ending ko is known to be the diminutive form used in the 1200,s in central/eastern Europe. The ke ending is probably similar. Schimke likely became a last name in 1500-1600s..
