Wilcox built a double log house on the premises now owned by Spencer Garritt, esq. Cleveland established his domicile about three-fourths of a mile north of Mr. Stevens', it being the premises now owned and occupied by E. H. Brown, on what is called the old plank road. Mr. Andrews, being a single man, resided with Mr. Cleveland. These three families composed the entire population of Montville during the fall and winter of 1815-16; but, the following summer commencing cold and dry, the beautiful stream of crystal water which flowed near the house of Mr. Cleveland, totally failed, leaving its channel dry and dusty, and the family half a mile or more from any living water. This circumstance, combined with the gloomy prospects of this ever-memorable year, so discouraged Mr. C. that he sold out, or gave up his claim on that land, to ANDREWS, and left for parts unknown.

Bulhand Joseph L. [Male] b. ABT 1839 OH - d. BET 1866 AND 1922

Hi Pauline, I went over to the court house this morning and found the death certificate. Charles father is Joseph Buhland from New York. There was no middle initial listed. His mother was Jane Andru as you had found. Ethelyn E. Parsons was married to Donald Charles Buhland. Charles Nelson Buhland was married to Laura L. Thomas. I think I have all the blanks for you. Donald's brothers Fred and Harry - Harry died in his 20's of pnemonia. He never married nor had children. Fred never married or had children before his death. I talked with Fred's Aunt Carrie she helped fill in the blanks. She also was curious, she had heard that the name was changed from Bullhand. She new that they had come from England. She had heard that they were the bull handlers over there and that's how the name came about.

He grew to manhood in this general area and married for the first time to Ann Elizabeth Jones on January 29, 1857. To this union two children were born; Jim and Ella. Ann passed away sometime after 1862. He left Michigan after she died and traveled to Oregon, where he settled in a small village called Canby. It was there that he met and married Nancy Mattoon on July 10, 1868. Prior to his settling in Oregon he did make one trip to the gold rush country in California in 1849.

He was able to diagnose many cases of illnesses and provide treatment especially through the use of herbs that he gathered in the hills around Dayton. He became known as Doctor Andrus. He also mixed and made liniments for his patients. My Aunt, Hazel Bramlett Messersmith, has told me, and has written many interesting happenings with Dr. Andrus. She wrote that she never knew him to work very hard, but lived on the money sent to him in letters from people he had doctored. E delivered most all of his Grandchildren. He was called one day by a lady who told him that her baby would not stop crying. He told her that if she would look at the diaper she was using, she would find that there was a pin sticking the baby and sure enough when the lady looked, that was the trouble. Hazel stayed with her Grandparents for some time and attended Dayton High School. One day she was reading a letter from one of her boyfriends to Grandpa Andrus, and had skipped a paragraph that was somewhat personal and she did not want her Grandfather to hear. When she had finished he said, “Hazel, go back and read that part you skipped.” Which really surprised her and she had no idea he knew and he could not see the letter. Another time, she had carefully taken a picture of a boyfriend up to her room and hit it in a suitcase. A supper that night, Grandpa Andrus said; “Hazel, run upstairs and get that picture of that young fella, I want to see what he looks like.” Again Hazel was so surprised, as he had no way of knowing about the picture. One of his patients was trying to fool him and he sent him a lock of his pregnant wife’s hair and asked if he could determine what was wrong with him. Grandpa Andrus wrote back and stated, “My God Man!, you are going to have a baby!”

“RILEY ANDRUS. Among the prosperous agriculturists of Douglas county is Ri“RILEY ANDRUS. Among the prosperous agriculturists of Douglas county is Riley Andrus, who owns a finely-improved and well managed ranch in the town of Looking Glass. Energetic, industrious and enterprising, he has ever been a useful citizen of the community in which he resides, and has taken a keen interest in advancing its growth and prosperity. A farmer by birth and breeding, he has nearly always been a tiller of the soil, and in the following of his independent occupation still finds his greatest pleasure. A native of Allegany county, N. Y., he was born March 5, 1830. At the age of six years he was taken by his parents to Michigan, where, as soon as old enough to wield axe, hoe or rake, he assisted in improving a homestead. Leaving the parental roof in 1853, he journeyed to the westward in search of fortune, being a firm believer in the stories of fabulous wealth to be obtained in the far-distant gold fields. After a six-months trip across the plains, he arrived on the Pacific coast. Settling in Santa Clara county, Cal., he followed mining and prospecting three years, but did not find the golden ore in sufficient quantities to warrant him in remaining there permanently. Coming to Oregon in 1856, he lived near Oregon City for about ten years, and then removed to Washington, taking up land near Palouse, where he remained fourteen years. Returning to Oregon, Mr. Andrus located in Douglas county, about six miles south of Roseburg, where he bought a donation claim, the ranch, on which many improvements had already been made, being known as the A. S. McCoy place. Here he has since lived, carrying on general farming after the most approved modern methods. He has one hundred and fifty-five acres of land, part of it being range land, and for a number of years he was extensively engaged in the stock business. In 1868, having been away from home fifteen years, Mr. Andrus returned to Michigan to visit ills friends and relatives. Going across the plains on horseback with a party of men, the Indians stole .some of the horses belonging to the party, and Mr. Andrus, always venturesome and daring, stole them back again, this being an experience that is so indelibly impressed on his mind that he will never forget it. While living in Oregon county, Mr. Andrus married Orphelia Mattoon, a native of that place, and into their home seven children have been born, namely: Alva, Orville, Louis, Flora, Nelson, Nancy and Myrtle. In politics Mr. Andrus was for many years a Republican, and sustained the principles of that party by voice and vote, but of late years has been independent, voting for the men and measures best for the country's interest.
